KC Tattoo Shop Invites Nana for Her First Rose Tattoo

KC Tattoo Shop Invites Nana for Her First Rose Tattoo

A Kansas City tattooist is opening her Westside studio for a seniors-focused open house. Ani Maldonado will host a VIP day for people aged 55 and older. The event invites curious newcomers to learn, consult and get inked on the spot.

Event details

The open house runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. It takes place at Tintoretta Tattoo Studio. The studio sits in a former church at 1017 W 29th St.

Who is welcome

The day is geared toward patrons 55 and older. But everyone is invited to attend. Younger clients often bring Nanas, grandpas and other older relatives.

Studio background and mission

Maldonado moved Tintoretta from a one-room West Bottoms shop into the church building. She designed the space to feel safe and comfortable. Her aim is to welcome women, people of color and the LGBTQ community.

Maldonado identifies as a gay, brown woman. She has 11 years of tattooing experience. She is 38 years old.

What to expect during the VIP day

Visitors can tour the studio and meet artists. They may ask questions or book consultations. Some guests can receive tattoos the same day.

  • Sample designs will be available.
  • Designs may include birth month flowers and family tributes.
  • Floral pieces, including roses, are popular with older clients.

Technique for older skin

Maldonado stresses that older skin requires a different approach. Skin thins with age and tends to be drier and more prone to bruising. She uses a gentle technique and sometimes different needle configurations.

She has tattooed people in their 70s getting first tattoos. Some work required multiple slow sessions. One project involved creating a floral design over double-mastectomy scars.

Community partners and amenities

Buôn Bán, a retail and consignment shop inside the studio, will be open. The space features work by local artists and makers. Scream Queens vegan ice cream will serve root beer floats.

Other food and coffee vendors will also be on site. The organizers hope the day feels welcoming and relaxed.

Origins and outreach

The VIP idea came from a co-organizer. Her mother had wanted a tattoo but felt intimidated by shops. Maldonado expects some clients will bring their older relatives.
