Tax Day 2026: Key Deadlines and Last Filing Date Revealed
More than 500 people attended Rep. Warren Davidson’s town hall in Trenton. Some attendees interrupted proceedings with chants of “tax the rich.” Video of the exchange circulated after the event.
Timing and filing basics
The Internal Revenue Service began accepting federal tax returns on Jan. 26. Taxes for 2025 are due for most taxpayers by Wednesday, April 15.
About 30% of filers say they will procrastinate, according to Investment Property Exchange Services. As Tax Day 2026 nears, knowing key deadlines matters.
Last filing date and extensions
For those who cannot file by April 15, a six-month extension is available. Filing with an extension moves the deadline to Oct. 15.
The extension applies to filing only. It does not extend the time to pay taxes owed.
State deadlines
Most states observe the same April 15 deadline as the federal government. Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky list April 15 as their state filing date.
Taxpayers should check their state tax office website for the latest information. Local holidays or late changes may affect deadlines.
Penalties and exceptions
Failing to file by the deadline triggers a Failure to File Penalty. The standard penalty is 5% of unpaid tax per month, up to 25%.
A smaller penalty of 0.5% applies when a return is filed but tax is unpaid. The 0.5% also applies if an extension is granted but taxes remain unpaid.
The IRS may extend deadlines for disaster victims and areas with local holidays. A full list of disaster-related extensions appears on the IRS website.
Refunds and checking status
If you file electronically and choose direct deposit, refunds are usually issued within 21 days. Paper returns can take about four weeks or longer.
Taxpayers can check federal refund status online at irs.gov/refunds. That page has the most current processing information.
Practical advice
If you expect to owe taxes, estimate the amount and pay by April 15. Paying on time reduces penalties and interest.
If you file for an extension, plan to submit your completed return by Oct. 15. Keep records of payments and filings to avoid disputes.
