Child Injured in Wolf Enclosure at ZooAmerica as Parents Watch
A child was injured at ZooAmerica in Hershey on the morning of Saturday, April 4. The toddler crawled under an outer perimeter fence and reached the primary metal barrier around the wolf habitat.
What happened
Reports say the child, described as about 17 to 18 months old, pushed a hand through the wolf enclosure fence. A wolf made contact by grabbing the child’s hand. Several bystanders intervened and helped pull the child away.
Parents and charges
The child’s guardians were identified as 43-year-old Carrie Sortor and 61-year-old Stephen Wilson of Lititz. Police say the pair sat on a bench about 25 to 30 feet from the child and appeared to be using cellphones before the incident.
After an initial investigation, Derry Township police and the Dauphin County District Attorney’s Office charged Sortor and Wilson. Each faces one count of endangering the welfare of children.

Zoo and operator response
Hershey Entertainment and Resorts issued a statement about the matter. The company said it was relieved the child suffered only minor injuries.
The operator said an unsupervised toddler crawled under an exterior perimeter fence, reached the wolf enclosure, and put a hand through the metal barrier. The statement described the wolf’s contact as natural animal behavior and not an act of aggression.
Safety measures
Hershey officials noted habitats have multiple protection layers. They also said clear signs and barriers are in place, and guests must closely supervise children at all times.
