Exclusive: Tobe Awaka Emerges as Arizona Star Before Final Four
In Indianapolis, Tobe Awaka reflected on how far he has come in four years. He stood inside Lucas Oil Stadium as Arizona readied for a Final Four matchup with Michigan.
Bronx roots and high school honors
Awaka finished his high school career at Cardinal Hayes in The Bronx. He was a senior in 2022 when honors arrived.
- Catholic League Player of the Year (2022)
- Gatorade New York Player of the Year (2022)
Despite the awards, he did not have a high-major scholarship offer coming out of high school.
Late blooming and pandemic setbacks
Awaka was a late bloomer who only took basketball seriously in high school. The COVID-19 pandemic shortened his sophomore season and eliminated his junior year.
Size, rejection and steady work
The forward measures 6-foot-8 and has a chiseled build. One local mid-major coach saw Awaka at an open gym and judged him not ready for that level.
Awaka described his rise as almost surreal. He credited persistent effort and consistency for his progress when speaking with Filmogaz.com on Thursday inside Lucas Oil Stadium.
Emergence at Arizona
Over four seasons he emerged as an Arizona star. His development transformed doubts into a prominent role on a Final Four team.
Awaka’s story is one of resilience. Next up is a high-stakes game against Michigan on college basketball’s biggest stage.
