Bournemouth and Poole Launch Food Waste Collection Next Week

Bournemouth and Poole Launch Food Waste Collection Next Week

Starting next week, Bournemouth and Poole will initiate a food waste collection program, enhancing their waste management services. This development comes as part of a nationwide effort following substantial government funding directed towards councils across England. Local authorities, including BCP Council, received financial support to roll out weekly food waste collections.

Government Funding for Waste Management

This year, councils in England received over £78 billion, with £340 million allocated specifically for the implementation of food waste collection services. Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole Council (BCP Council) received a grant totaling £2,019,805.02 to assist in aligning with the new regulations aimed at reducing carbon emissions and minimizing the environmental impact of waste disposal.

Timeline for Implementation

Although BCP Council missed the initial deadline of March 31, they are set to introduce the weekly food waste collection service on April 6. There has been a significant push for all households to participate by utilizing food waste caddies provided by the council.

Food Waste Caddies Distribution

The council has begun the distribution of food waste caddies to all households in Poole and eligible residences in Bournemouth. Residents who have not received a caddy are encouraged to contact the council to obtain their free bin.

What Can Be Recycled?

To streamline the recycling process, the council provided guidelines on what can and cannot be placed in each type of bin:

  • Recycling Bin:
    • Wrapping paper (non-foil)
    • Newspapers and magazines
    • Plastic bottles and pots
    • Tins and cans
    • Glass bottles and jars
  • Garden Waste Bin:
    • Grass cuttings
    • Leaves and twigs
    • Plants and flowers
  • Food Waste Container:
    • All cooked and uncooked food items
    • Fruit and vegetable peelings
    • Leftovers and plate scrapings
  • Rubbish Bin:
    • Disposable nappies
    • Plastic wrapping
    • Pet waste

The launch of the food waste collection service next week marks a significant step towards improved waste management and sustainability in Bournemouth and Poole. Through these initiatives, the council aims to foster a more environmentally friendly community.
