Mechanical Issue Strands Passengers Overnight on Texada Island B.C. Ferries

A mechanical failure on a B.C. Ferries vessel disrupted service between the Sunshine Coast and Texada Island, stranding passengers overnight. The incident involved the Island Discovery, which experienced propulsion issues during its Friday night sailing from Blubber Bay to Westview in Powell River.

Incident Overview

As of Saturday afternoon, an engineering team was addressing the mechanical problem. B.C. Ferries spokesperson Ceilidh Marlow acknowledged the inconvenience caused to customers, expressing appreciation for their patience. The vessel was also carrying a B.C. Ambulance Service unit transporting a patient at the time of the incident.

Passenger Experiences

Due to the cancellations, all sailings along the route were suspended on Saturday. Mara Decker and her boyfriend were on a day trip to Texada Island and found themselves unexpectedly stranded. “We were told that we were stuck on the island,” Decker said. They quickly found accommodation at the Texada Inn, avoiding a night in their vehicle.

  • Passengers left stranded due to ferry cancellations.
  • Individuals had to secure accommodation unexpectedly.

Decker mentioned that they had to rely on complimentary water taxis the next morning to leave the island, abandoning their car. “What should have just been a few-hour day trip turned into a whole night ordeal,” she remarked, noting the additional costs incurred for hotel, food, and gas.

Another passenger, Carly Tre, was aboard the Island Discovery when the mechanical failure occurred. Initially scheduled for a 45-minute crossing, the journey extended to nearly four hours. “The power seemed to be off in some places,” Tre said, describing the vessel’s erratic condition before it came to a complete stop.

Community Impact

Local residents were also affected. Texada Island resident Zachary Goldman was unable to reach Powell River for work and had to arrange last-minute coverage. “Not my favourite experience, but part of living on a small island,” he commented.

Response Measures

B.C. Ferries is considering supplementary service options in case the disruption continues. On Saturday morning, two water taxis began operating at 6:00 a.m. PDT, each capable of transporting 12 passengers. A tugboat assisted in bringing the Island Discovery back to Powell River.

Service updates are being provided on the B.C. Ferries website, with a focus on resolving the mechanical issue swiftly and restoring regular service. Customers are encouraged to stay informed as the situation develops.
