Bill Guerin’s New Additions Strengthen Wild’s Depth
In Sunrise, Fla., Minnesota general manager Bill Guerin spoke to reporters between periods of a game. The Wild beat the Florida Panthers 3-2 on a warm Thursday night.
Deadline moves and roster additions
Guerin reshaped parts of the roster around the first Friday of March. He did not trade for a marquee center or surrender top prospects.
- Acquired defenseman Jeff Petry.
- Added forwards Nick Foligno, Michael McCarron, Robby Fabbri and Bobby Brink.
Those new additions were intended to strengthen Minnesota’s depth. Guerin had targeted a puck-moving center who could win faceoffs.
Impact in Florida
The win came at Amerant Bank Arena as the sun set over the Everglades. Petry recorded his first point in a Minnesota sweater during the first period.
Rookie goalie Jesper Wallstedt made 18 saves to secure the victory. The outing marked Wallstedt’s 15th win of the season.
Managing depth and injuries
As late March injuries arose, the extra manpower proved useful. Minnesota was traveling with 26 players at one point.
Last season’s playoff push suffered when Joel Eriksson Ek missed much of March. Kirill Kaprizov also missed about half the season.
Coaching decisions and scratches
Coach John Hynes stressed the need for clear communication. Healthy scratches increased, including Nico Sturm, Danila Yurov and Zach Bogosian.
Those lineup calls were difficult, but expected with a deeper roster. Guerin emphasized that everyone would be needed during the run.
Playoff implications
Guerin’s experience includes playing on two Stanley Cup winners and time in management. He called depth a vital tool for the postseason.
The organization believes the new additions improve the Wild’s depth and playoff readiness. The front office hopes it sets the team up for a rare extended run.
