Expedition 74 Astronauts Gear Up for Cygnus Cargo Mission: Weekly Activities
A NASA update on March 30 outlined key tasks aboard the International Space Station. The Expedition 74 crew spent the week preparing for the forthcoming Cygnus XL resupply flight. The shipment is scheduled to lift off no earlier than April 8.
Crew training and Cygnus cargo mission readiness
NASA flight engineers Chris Williams and Jack Hathaway rehearsed rendezvous procedures. They worked with station monitors to ensure Cygnus approach systems are ready. The cargo delivery will include hardware for quantum physics, stem cell therapy tests, and astronaut health studies.
Rendezvous monitoring and procedures
The team reviewed automated approach steps and how to monitor docking sequences. They practiced responses for potential anomalies during final approach. These sessions were a core part of the week’s Expedition 74 astronauts’ weekly activities.
Spacesuit maintenance and life-support checks
Flight engineer Jessica Meir serviced suits used in a March 18 seven-hour spacewalk. She flushed and refilled water-cooling loops to remove bubbles and contaminants. Meir also inspected temperature regulation systems for leaks or failures.
Science operations and data handling
ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot led multiple research tasks. She swapped samples in the Minus Eighty-Degree Laboratory Freezer (MELFI) and logged experiment status. Adenot also powered down hardware and inventoried biomedical gear for cardiovascular studies.
- JAFDIS demonstrations aimed to improve large-data downlinks.
- Vascular Aging work used blood samples and wearable sensors.
- Adenot produced an educational video for student audiences.
Emergency preparedness and station upkeep
The crew ran a medical emergency drill in the afternoon. Four crewmembers practiced CPR and medical equipment procedures with Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev. Fedyaev also installed smoke detectors and gas masks in the Nauka module.
Fedyaev conducted drinking water quality tests afterward. The station commander monitored electrical systems and tracked the Elektron oxygen generator. He also trained on applying artificial intelligence tools for onboard tasks.
Flight engineer Sergei Mikaev unloaded Progress 94 supplies. The ship contained roughly three tons of food, fuel, and other essentials. The team continued verifying the safety and quality of station consumables.
Ground-to-space context and crew movement
A handout image from late November 2025 showed astronaut Chris Williams and Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev in quarantine. They appeared behind glass during a press conference at the Cosmonaut Hotel in Baikonur, Kazakhstan. The trio prepared to launch aboard Soyuz MS-28 on November 27, 2025.
These weekly efforts kept operational focus on cargo preparation, systems care, and research support. Filmogaz.com will provide updates as the Cygnus cargo mission advances.
