Mariners’ Season Opener: 6 Key Highlights
The Seattle Mariners opened their 2026 campaign with a four-game split against the Cleveland Guardians at T-Mobile Park. Seattle outscored Cleveland 22-13 across the series. Three of the club’s biggest bats struggled, while several others stood out.
Series snapshot and early struggles
The four-game series ended 2-2. Cal Raleigh, Julio Rodríguez and Josh Naylor combined for just three hits in 45 at-bats.
This recap highlights six key highlights from the Mariners’ season opener. It focuses on individual performances that shaped the series.
Emerson Hancock’s breakthrough
Dominant spot start
Emerson Hancock stepped into the rotation with Bryce Miller on the injured list. Miller is sidelined with a strained oblique.
The 26-year-old former first-round pick threw six no-hit innings. He struck out a career-high nine batters and used 97 pitches.
Hancock retired 17 of 19 batters. He allowed only a walk and a hit by pitch. No batted ball left the infield.
His outing placed him in rare Mariners company. Félix Hernández was the only other pitcher with nine-plus strikeouts in six-plus no-hit innings. James Paxton was the last to reach six no-hit innings for Seattle in 2018.
Luke Raley’s hot start
Luke Raley began the season with early power. He is 4 for 14 with three home runs.
Raley homered in each of Seattle’s first three games. One drive off Tanner Bibee registered a 113.8 mph exit velocity.
He added a two-run shot off Colin Holderman and a 10th-inning two-run blast off Connor Brogdon. The power is a welcome sign after a limited 2025 season.
Brendan Donovan’s immediate impact
Brendan Donovan homered in his first regular-season at-bat for Seattle. He arrived via a three-way trade last month.
Through four games, Donovan is 6 for 14 with two homers and a double. He committed a 10th-inning throwing error in one game.
Donovan also made a key backhanded play the following day. His early production has already helped the lineup.
Strong work from the rotation
George Kirby settles in
George Kirby yielded a first-inning solo home run to Chase DeLauter, the MLB home run leader. He then settled into a strong outing.
Kirby completed six innings, allowing one run and two hits. He struck out six and issued two walks.
Bryan Woo continues form
Bryan Woo opened 2026 much like he finished 2025. The 26-year-old All-Star tossed six innings while allowing two runs and four hits.
Woo struck out nine and walked one. His nine punchouts tied for the second-most of his career.
Dominic Canzone’s opening-night blast
Dominic Canzone homered twice in Thursday’s opener. One of his shots traveled 444 feet to right-center field.
He finished the series 3 for 10, with two homers and a double. Canzone provided an early offensive spark for Seattle.
