Marshals TV Show Premieres on CBS: Monica Dutton Death Explained, Full Cast, and Where to Watch the Yellowstone Spinoff
Marshals TV Show

The Marshals show premiered on CBS on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at 8:00 p.m. ET, delivering the first major answer Yellowstone fans had been waiting for: what happened to Monica Dutton. The premiere opens with Kayce Dutton waking up in an empty room after a dream where, as a Navy SEAL, he is screaming "Monica, where are you?" Within the first act, the show confirms she is gone — and Kayce is raising their teenage son Tate alone.

Marshals is a spin-off and sequel to Yellowstone and is the fourth television series in the Yellowstone franchise. It was originally developed under the working title Y: Marshals before CBS dropped the "Y:" from the title in January 2026.

What Happened to Monica Dutton in Marshals — Why Kelsey Asbille Is Not in the Show

Monica Dutton, played by Kelsey Asbille across all five seasons of Yellowstone, died between the end of the parent series and the start of Marshals. A specific cause of death is only implied in the first three episodes — never directly named on screen. The sudden absence in her life is effectively the inciting incident of the series and colors the entire plot.

Kayce tells his son Tate early in the premiere: "I know your mom was better at all this," signaling that her loss is raw and recent. Later, he visits her grave and delivers one of the episode's most emotional lines: "The best part of me died with you." Hints in the story connect Monica's death to contaminated water from a nearby government mining operation on the Broken Rock Reservation — but the show stops short of an explicit confirmation in its opening episode.

Showrunner Spencer Hudnut has explained the decision directly: "Kayce's dealing with the grief and the loss. This is the person who really kept him anchored the entire run of Yellowstone. This is the love of his life. Her presence and her loss is definitely a big runner throughout the first season, and she'll be with him throughout the show."

Full Marshals Cast: Luke Grimes Leads Returning Yellowstone Faces and New Characters

Marshals stars Luke Grimes, Brecken Merrill, Mo Brings Plenty, and Gil Birmingham — all reprising their roles from Yellowstone — with Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, Tatanka Means, and Logan Marshall-Green also starring.

Kayce's new team is a ragtag unit: Belle, played by Arielle Kebbel, is a former ATF undercover operative; Andrea, played by Ash Santos, is a cop's kid navigating the culture clash of Montana law enforcement; and Miles, played by Tatanka Means, is a Broken Rock force member who joins up with the federal team. Brett Cullen plays U.S. Marshal Harry Gifford, a presidential appointee who serves as the unit's arrogant authority figure.

Logan Marshall-Green plays Pete Calvin, Kayce's old SEAL teammate who recruits him into the Marshals operation. Taylor Sheridan holds an executive producer credit, though the series was created by Spencer Hudnut, who previously served as showrunner of SEAL Team on CBS — making him a natural fit for a show built around military discipline and procedural structure.
