Irish Summer Holidays Secure, But Expect Price Surge

The conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran is disrupting global fuel flows. Airlines and airports now warn of jet fuel shortages and rising costs.

Airlines’ supply guarantees

Ryanair told Bloomberg that suppliers have guaranteed jet fuel until around mid-May. Virgin Atlantic has signalled similar assurances.

Ryanair spokeswoman Emer Igbokwe said supply would remain stable if the conflict ends soon. She added that continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz into May or June could create risks at some European airports.

European airport warnings

The Financial Times reported that European airports could face fuel shortages within three weeks. The report cited industry concerns about delivery interruptions.

Airport industry group ACI Europe sent a letter to EU transport commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas. The letter warned that, without resumption of traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a systemic jet fuel shortage in the EU could become a reality.

Strait of Hormuz implications

The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical chokepoint for global oil and jet fuel shipments. Extended disruption there would tighten supplies across Europe.

Impact on travellers and the hospitality sector

Airlines are likely to factor higher fuel costs into airfares. Hotels and restaurants may also pass on higher electricity and operating costs to customers.

Irish travellers can expect summer holidays to remain secure. They should nevertheless prepare for a notable price surge across flights, accommodation and services.
