Legendary Melbourne Cup Champion Makybe Diva Passes, Racing World Mourns
The racing world is in mourning following the passing of Makybe Diva, Australia’s most celebrated staying mare. She died on a Saturday morning due to a sudden colic attack at the age of 27.
Makybe Diva’s Historic Achievements
Makybe Diva made history as the first horse to win three Melbourne Cups. Her victories came in:
- 2003 – trained by David Hall
- 2004 – under the care of the Freedman brothers
- 2005 – again trained by the Freedman brothers
In addition to her Melbourne Cup successes, she partnered with jockey Glen Boss to win the prestigious Cox Plate in 2005. Boss was integral to Makybe Diva’s legacy, riding her in all her Cup victories.
Life After Racing
After her final Melbourne Cup win in 2005, owner Tony Santic announced her retirement. Makybe Diva spent her retirement at Santic’s property in Gnarwarre, near Geelong.
Colic and Its Impact
Colic, a gastrointestinal disorder in horses, can be fatal and was the cause of her untimely death. Santic expressed his deep connection to the mare, stating, “From the day she came into our lives, she was never just a racehorse; she was family.”
He added, “She gave us moments Australia will never forget, but more than that, she gave us joy every single day.” This sentiment reflects her significant impact on fans and the racing community alike.
Legacy of Love
Makybe Diva was cherished not just for her exceptional racing talent but also for the joy she brought to her team and fans. Her legacy extends beyond the racetrack, leaving a lasting impression on Australian horse racing history.
