Group Ejected from Mardi Gras Festivities
A left-wing activist group has been ejected from the annual Mardi Gras festivities in Sydney. This decision follows their refusal to remove social media posts accusing another group of supporting “pro-genocide” views. Tens of thousands are expected at the event this Saturday night, marking the 48th Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade.
Mardi Gras Expulsion Controversy
Pride in Protest, the group that has previously participated in the parade, describes itself as a coalition advocating for social justice within the queer community. Late on Friday, they announced through social media that organizers had barred them from marching unless they removed their posts regarding Dayenu, a group set to participate in the parade.
Claims of Censorship
Dayenu promotes itself as Sydney’s first Jewish LGBTQ+ community social group. Initially, Dayenu withdrew from the parade out of safety concerns for its members. However, they later decided to participate for the 26th time.
In a statement, Mardi Gras Chief Executive Jesse Matheson informed Pride in Protest that they would be prohibited from marching without the deletion of their contentious posts. Such actions have led Pride in Protest to accuse the Mardi Gras organizers of censorship.
Protest Scheduled
In response to their expulsion, Pride in Protest has called for a demonstration at Sydney’s Town Hall on Saturday afternoon. Their aim is to raise awareness regarding the treatment they received from the event organizers.
Dayenu’s Response
Dayenu expressed that they were “deeply offended” by the accusations made by Pride in Protest. They insisted that they are not a Zionist organization and that the term Zionist is improperly used to insult their Jewish community. The situation around this year’s Mardi Gras continues to evolve, with more updates expected.
