God of War Amazon Series: Ryan Hurst Is Kratos, Ed Skrein Is Baldur, and Production Has Begun
The God of War live-action TV show just became very real. Amazon Prime Video dropped the first official look at Ryan Hurst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as Atreus today, Friday, February 27, 2026 ET — the same day production officially began in Vancouver. The two-season-ordered series is already one of the most anticipated video game adaptations in television history.
First Look Revealed: Ryan Hurst Is Kratos
Ryan Hurst appears right at home daubed in red-and-white head to toe as Kratos, while Callum Vinson — armed with his trusty Talon Bow — gives a convincing god-in-training in his Atreus attire in the first official image from the series.
Ryan Hurst, the Sons of Anarchy actor best known for his role as Opie Winston, said he feels grateful to have the part, adding that he used to play the games and now he gets to be Kratos. The casting is a full-circle moment — Hurst previously voiced Thor in God of War: Ragnarök in 2022, making him the first actor to play both a major Norse god and Kratos himself across the same franchise.
Ed Skrein Joins as Baldur — His Most Anticipated Villain Yet
Ed Skrein will star as Baldur in the God of War series, currently in pre-production in Vancouver. He will appear alongside series leads Ryan Hurst and Callum Vinson.
Ed Skrein will play Baldur, the youngest son of Odin. In the 2018 God of War game, Baldur was played by Saving Private Ryan's Jeremy Davies. Skrein's television credits include Game of Thrones and All the Light We Cannot See, while his film roles span the villainous Francis/Ajax in the first Deadpool movie, Rebel Moon, Jurassic World Rebirth, and Alita: Battle Angel — a résumé that makes him a natural fit for Baldur's cold, unstoppable menace.
The Full God of War TV Show Cast
Additional cast members include Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as brothers Brok and Sindri, and Ed Skrein as Baldur. Teresa Palmer joins the cast as Sif, Thor's wife. Patinkin's casting as Odin — the all-father of the Norse pantheon — is the most surprising and most praised of the ensemble, with fans calling it inspired.
Ronald D. Moore Showruns, Frederick E.O. Toye Directs
Ronald D. Moore is the writer, executive producer, and showrunner on God of War under his Tall Ship Productions banner. Frederick E.O. Toye will direct the first two episodes. Moore is best known as the creator of Battlestar Galactica and the showrunner of Outlander — two of the most acclaimed genre series in television history. Toye's directorial credits include Shogun and The Boys.
The series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions. Executive producers include God of War game director Cory Barlog, ensuring direct creative lineage from the PlayStation titles that made the franchise legendary.
What the God of War TV Show Is About — The Story Follows Both Games
The series will pick up with the story of the two most recent God of War games, in which Kratos must raise his ten-year-old son Atreus while battling gods of the Norse pantheon. The official logline reads: "Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human." The God of War series has received a two-season order at Amazon.
A release date has not yet been announced. Production is currently underway in Vancouver, with the first two episodes being directed by Toye. Based on the scope of the cast, the two-season commitment, and Ronald D. Moore's track record, the God of War TV show is shaping up to be one of Amazon Prime Video's biggest bets since The Rings of Power.
