Pokemon Winds And Waves gets first look in Pokémon Presents livestream

The new generation was unveiled in a Pokémon Presents 30th anniversary livestream, and the announcement of Pokemon Winds And Waves introduced the 10th generation, three new starter Pokémon and a sweeping open-world tease ahead of a release next year on the Nintendo Switch 2.

Pokemon Winds And Waves revealed in 30th anniversary livestream

The presentation showed the first look at the 10th generation titled "Winds" and "Waves, " and confirmed the games will release next year on the Nintendo Switch 2. The three starter Pokémon were shown by name: Browt, a grass-type chick; Pombon, a fiery Pomeranian-inspired creature; and Gecqua, a water gecko. The trailer gave players an early sense of the unnamed region's scale compared with past entries like Scarlet and Violet and Legends Z-A.

Teaser opens in an oceanfront home with two Pikachus

In the final minutes of the presentation, a teaser sequence began in an oceanfront home with a knock at the door. When the door opened, two costumed Pikachus appeared, suggesting a new level of customization for the electric icon. One Pikachu wore sunglasses, a white hat and a floral shirt; the other wore a blue cap and a matching dress.

Trailer scenes: Tropius, Wailord, Tailow, Slugma and a floating tower

The short trailer zoomed over the unnamed region and included a tropical forest with a roaming Tropius and a Gloom, an ocean with a gigantic Wailord spewing water from its spout, grassy plains with Tailow flying about, and a lava-filled volcano with Slugma oozing around. The footage also offered quick looks at a massive tower floating in the water that could be some kind of gym, plus a beachside town with buildings connected by aquatic bridges.

Day-night cycle and open-world detail

The presentation suggested a robust day-night cycle, with different Pokémon appearing during early morning, sunset and dusk. The trailer framed the unnamed region as more expansive and detailed than recent entries, highlighting varied environments tied to specific Pokémon encounters and visual set pieces such as the floating tower and ocean sprawl.

Other game releases and ports announced

Alongside Winds and Waves, the livestream confirmed that FireRed and LeafGreen are coming to Nintendo Switch Online, and that the 2005 GameCube title Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness will also join the service. The new battling game Pokémon Champions will release on the Switch in April and on mobile devices later this year.

A playful Error 418 message

An unrelated Error 418 page accompanying the coverage displayed the line "Short and stout, this is my handle, this is my spout, " echoing the "I am a teapot" theme found in the Error 418 joke. The presence of that page was separate from the Pokémon Presents trailer and announcement.

Next on the schedule: Winds and Waves are slated for release next year on Nintendo Switch 2, Pokémon Champions will arrive on Switch in April and later on mobile devices this year, and FireRed, LeafGreen and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness are set to come to Nintendo Switch Online.
