Mild Temperatures Up to 16C Expected This Weekend, Ending Wintry Weather
This weekend, the UK is set to experience a significant rise in temperatures, reaching up to 16°C (61°F) in some regions. This marks a transition from the recent wintry conditions that included ice and snow warnings. Although many will enjoy milder and brighter weather, some areas should prepare for potential rain and heavy showers, which could lead to flooding on saturated ground.
Mild Weather Forecast for the Weekend
According to Jo Wheeler, a weather producer, parts of the UK have endured over 51 consecutive days of rain leading into 2026. However, a notable shift in weather is expected. While the forecast indicates temperatures may surpass the seasonal norms, it is important to note that the UK will not experience a heatwave.
Temperature Trends
Forecasts indicate a rise in temperatures to the early teens over the weekend, with a peak of 16°C anticipated on Saturday, particularly in southern England. The previous highest temperature recorded this year was 13.9°C (57°F) on February 6.
Rain and Flood Risks
- The northern regions and western Scotland are poised to experience the most rainfall.
- More than 60 flood warnings remain active in England, including significant areas around rivers like the Ebble and Avon.
- Groundwater flooding warnings have been issued for parts of Wiltshire, Hampshire, and Dorset.
Recent data highlights that Northern Ireland and southwest England had their wettest January on record. Additionally, it has been one of the top five wettest January months since 1890 for southern England counties.
Weather Advisory and Warnings
Yellow weather warnings for rain, snow, and ice were disseminated by the Met Office earlier this week, largely due to Storm Pedro. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) also issued cold weather alerts across most of England until late Friday afternoon.
Cautions for the Upcoming Week
While temperatures will increase, Wheeler cautioned not to be misled into thinking that spring is approaching. Fluctuations in temperatures are likely, with the potential for a return to average or below-average conditions in the near future.
As the weekend unfolds, residents are encouraged to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and remain vigilant regarding the ongoing risks of flooding in some areas.
