Swiss Commentator Criticizes Israeli Bobsleigh Team at Winter Olympics
A controversy has erupted surrounding Swiss commentator Stefan Reina’s remarks during the Israeli bobsleigh team’s participation at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. The event has drawn significant attention due to Reina’s comments regarding the team’s pilot, Adam Jeremy Edelman.
Commentary During the Bobsleigh Event
During the bobsleigh run at the Milano Cortina Games, Reina described Edelman as “a Zionist to the core.” His comments stemmed from Edelman’s social media activity, where he expressed support for Israel’s military actions in Gaza. “Adam Edelman is an Israeli athlete and a Zionist to the core, as he describes himself,” Reina stated.
Reina further emphasized the nature of Edelman’s posts, stating, “It should be noted that the term ‘genocide’ is the one used by the UN Commission of Inquiry.” He referred to Edelman’s characterization of the military intervention as “the most just and moral war in history.”
Questions About Olympic Eligibility
The commentator questioned the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) standards on athlete eligibility. He pointed out the inconsistency in applying criteria to athletes involved in military activities. Reina remarked, “Why aren’t similar standards applied to Israel?” This criticism aligns with the IOC’s earlier decisions concerning Russian athletes following the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.
The Israeli bobsleigh team finished last among 26 competitors. Following the broadcast, Reina’s video was widely shared on social media but was subsequently removed from the RTS YouTube channel. The Swiss media outlet stated that the commentary was deemed too lengthy for sports coverage.
Reactions to the Commentary
- Reina’s commentary received praise from some sports fans and supporters of Palestine.
- Criticism erupted from public figures, including the U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, who accused Reina of promoting anti-Semitism.
- The organization StopAntisemitism called for Reina’s dismissal, claiming he insulted the Israeli team.
Edelman also responded, defending his team and highlighting their pride and determination. He remarked, “We have no coach, no intensive training program, just a dream, determination, and unwavering pride in what we represent.”
Response from the IOC
The IOC has not officially addressed the situation. However, spokesman Mark Adams commented on the importance of upholding Olympic values, stating, “I would remind everyone involved… of the idea of us trying to bring people together.” He referred inquiries regarding Reina’s comments back to the broadcaster.
