Stronger NHL Thrives Through Key Partnerships with AJLNH and IIHF

The NHL is set to participate in the Olympic Games for the first time since 2014. The league previously opted out of the 2018 PyeongChang Games and withdrew from the Beijing 2022 Games due to pandemic-related concerns. The NHL’s presence in Milan marks a significant collaboration with AJLNH and IIHF.

Collaboration and Planning Between NHL, AJLNH, and IIHF

Commissioner Gary Bettman highlighted the extensive planning behind this return, noting that it took two years of discussions to reach this point. “We hadn’t seen the best players in the world compete since Sochi,” he remarked. The goal was to unite all players for a premier competition to promote hockey effectively.

Increased Flexibility from the IOC

A pivotal factor in this agreement was the enhanced flexibility provided by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Bettman stated that the NHL and AJLNH now enjoy greater latitude and access during these Games than in previous years, namely those held in 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014.

  • Improved content production capabilities.
  • Enhanced promotional opportunities for both the NHL and players.
  • Greater use of social media by players to share their experiences.

“Players can create content as participants, and we can share it,” Bettman explained. This new arrangement allows for better access than before, including joint logo usage. He believes that as the IOC recognizes hockey’s prominence at the Winter Games, this collaboration will continue to evolve.

The excitement surrounding the tournament, evident in the smiles of the players, emphasizes the significance of this event. It reflects the successful efforts of the NHL, AJLNH, and IIHF, aiming to enhance the sport’s visibility and growth on an international stage.
