Discord Implements Age Verification for Adult Content Access
Discord is introducing new safety measures aimed at protecting younger users on its platform. Beginning in March, all users will experience a “teen-appropriate experience” by default. Access to adult content will now require a verification process, ensuring greater safety for younger users.
Key Changes to User Verification
The upcoming update includes several critical features:
- Verification will be necessary to unlock age-restricted content.
- Non-verified users will see blurred sensitive content.
- Restricted access to age-gated channels and servers.
- Direct messages (DMs) and friend requests from unknown users will be filtered into a separate inbox.
Verification Methods
Adult users will be able to verify their age through two methods:
- Submitting a selfie video for age estimation
- Providing a government-issued ID to Discord’s vendor partners
Discord assures users that video selfies will remain on their devices and that ID documents will be deleted swiftly after verification. While most users may expect a one-time verification process, some may need to submit additional verification forms.
Future Developments
Discord plans to introduce more verification options, including a background age inference model. This initiative is part of the company’s ongoing effort to enhance child safety on its platform. In 2023, Discord banned teen dating channels and AI-generated child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Following an alarming report identifying cases of serious crimes linked to Discord, including kidnapping and grooming, these changes were instituted.
Teen Council Formation
In addition to these changes, Discord is forming a new Teen Council. This group will consist of 10 to 12 teens, aged 13 to 17. The aim is to better understand the needs of younger users and create a safe online environment. This initiative is based on the idea that listening to children is as important as talking to them.
The rollout of these safety measures will commence globally in early March. All users, both new and existing, will need to complete the verification process to access adult content. Discord continues to prioritize the safety and wellbeing of its users while adapting to the evolving digital landscape.
