‘Music & the Spoken Word: Experience the Profound Message of ‘This is Jesus’’

Derrick Porter will deliver “The Spoken Word” on Sunday, March 29, 2026. The address appears during the weekly Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square broadcast. This edition marks No. 5,037 of the long-running program.

Palm Sunday remembrance

More than two thousand years ago, people lined the road as Jesus approached Jerusalem. They spread cloaks and palm branches and shouted praise. Observers asked, “Who is this?” and many identified Him as Jesus of Nazareth.

The crowd used the word hosanna, which means “save now.” Many hoped the Messiah would free them from Roman rule. They had heard of His miracles and expected immediate deliverance.

Compassion and sorrow

As He looked over the city, Jesus wept for what would come next. He foresaw rejection and suffering. Some who praised Him would later call for His crucifixion.

Theological meaning

Christian teaching holds that His suffering was voluntary and part of a divine plan. That sacrifice opened the way for resurrection and eternal life for all. Hosanna now embraces both plea and praise, expressing hope and recognition of victory over death.

Scripture also promises a future moment when every knee will bow and every tongue will confess. Then the question “Who is this?” will be answered universally: He is the Son of God and Savior of the world.
