Transforming Care into Careers: National Apprenticeship Week 2026 Highlights

National Apprenticeship Week 2026 commenced on February 9, initiating a week-long celebration of apprenticeships across the nation. This event aims to highlight the positive effects of apprenticeships on individuals, businesses, and the economy.

Spotlight on Tyreece Moss

A compelling story emerging from this initiative is that of Tyreece Moss, a 20-year-old from Hull. Tyreece’s journey reflects the transformative potential of apprenticeships. With the support of Hull Training and Adult Education (HTAE), he successfully completed his apprenticeship as a Signage Technician at Level 3.

From Care to Career

Three years ago, Tyreece was in a challenging position. After the loss of his grandfather at 16, he entered the care system, where he faced numerous obstacles. At 17, living in supported accommodation, he received help from his carers to develop his CV. This support ultimately led him to an HTAE open event.

Tyreece was inspired by Mike Gooch, his signmaking tutor, who made the apprenticeship program sound appealing. Despite lacking his maths and English qualifications, HTAE provided crucial assistance in achieving those educational requirements.

Achievements and Community Support

Recently, Tyreece achieved his End Point Assessment (EPA), which he described as a pivotal moment. “It felt amazing to pass my EPA; it made those two years completely worth it,” he shared. His hard work was recognized when he won a Blue Diamond Award for outstanding achievement and the Overcoming Barriers Award at the HTAE Learners Awards 2024.

  • Blue Diamond Award: Care leavers’ award for outstanding achievement.
  • Overcoming Barriers Award: Recognizes resilience and determination.

Matt Vinyl Graphics, where Tyreece works as a vinyl preparator, played a crucial role in his stability. The company provided him with housing after he turned 18, which allowed him to transition smoothly from supported accommodation.

Tyreece expressed heartfelt gratitude, stating, “I’m incredibly grateful that people believed in me.” He emphasized that his employers not only supported his career but also helped him find accommodation during a difficult time.

A Family Business Supporting Growth

Lauren Nicholson, an accounts clerk at Matt Vinyl Graphics, praised Tyreece, saying, “He’s reliable, driven, and always willing to learn.” She noted that his awards are a testament to his dedication and professionalism.

A Mentor and Inspirational Figure

Mike Gooch, Tyreece’s former tutor, reflected on his journey, stating, “To see him pass his EPA is extraordinary. This is one of the most rewarding results I have had in my career.”

The council plans to share additional stories of apprenticeship successes throughout National Apprenticeship Week, which continues until February 16. This initiative aims to encourage both learners and employers to explore apprenticeship opportunities.
