OSU Unveils Champion Plaza and Sculpture Honoring Jesse Owens

Ohio State University (OSU) recently unveiled Champion Plaza and a significant sculpture celebrating Jesse Owens, a legendary athlete. This year marks the 90th anniversary of Owens’ groundbreaking achievements during the 1936 Olympics held in Berlin, Germany. Owens, then an OSU student, won four Olympic gold medals, challenging racial ideologies upheld by Adolf Hitler and exposing systemic racism prevalent in 1930s America.

A Tribute to a Champion

In celebration of Owens’ legacy, OSU renamed its recreation centers in his honor following his passing in March 1980. The Jesse Owens Recreation Center South and Jesse Owens North are vital facilities on campus, located at:

  • Jesse Owens Recreation Center South: W. 11th Ave. and Worthington St.
  • Jesse Owens North: Lane Ave. and Neil Ave.

However, the university aimed for a more significant memorial. It commissioned a large sculpture, designated as the centerpiece of the Jesse Owens Memorial Plaza at the north end of Ohio Stadium. This project, with a budget of $350,000, included $100,000 specifically for public artwork honoring Owens.

Design Selection and Controversy

The selection process for the sculptor was managed by Ohio State. Curtis R. Patterson, the then-chairman of the sculpture department at the Atlanta College of Art, won against 32 other artists, seven of whom were Ohio natives. Although concerns were raised about the exclusion of local talent, Ruth Owens, Jesse Owens’ wife, was pleased with Patterson’s design.

The Sculpture’s Unveiling

Dedicated on May 24, 1984, the sculpture titled “Celebration for a Champion” represents Owens’ extraordinary journey. The design features:

  • Four triangles symbolizing his Olympic gold medals.
  • Latticework signifying his struggles.
  • Gold bars representing the hurdles he overcame.

This visually dynamic structure measures 35 feet by 12 feet and weighs approximately 15,000 pounds. As “penetrable” public art, it invites visitors to walk through its elements and reflect on Owens’ inspiring quotes inscribed within.

Impact on OSU and the Community

The Jesse Owens Memorial Plaza enhances Ohio Stadium’s main entrance, providing a welcoming green space and aiding in crowd management during game days. The sculpture stands not just as a tribute to Owens but also as a reminder of the challenges he faced, serving as an inspiration for future generations.

As the university embraces Owens’ legacy, contributors aim to attract private donations to support the Jesse Owens Memorial Foundation scholarships. The ongoing recognition of Jesse Owens continues to foster pride within OSU and serves as a testament to his enduring impact on sports and society.
