Ayrshire’s Unique Olympic Product Captivates Global Attention

Kays Curling, a company based in Mauchline, has gained global recognition for its unique Olympic product. Established in 1851, Kays Curling specializes in creating curling stones from granite sourced from Ailsa Craig, located off the coast of South Ayrshire.

A Unique Olympic Product from Ayrshire

The transformation of raw granite into curling stones is a meticulous process that takes approximately six to seven hours. Initially known as “cheeses” due to their shape, these stones undergo extensive craftsmanship before being deemed ready for use in competitions.

Production Process

Ricky English, the operations manager, oversees a dedicated team of fewer than 20 staff members. He explains that the extraction of granite occurs every five to six years, emphasizing that regardless of the heightened attention during the Olympic Games, the company maintains strict quality standards.

  • 132 stones were commissioned for this year’s Olympic Games.
  • The stones are crafted using a blend of blue hone granite from the north side and green granite from the southern region of Ailsa Craig.
  • Each stone boasts a lifespan of 30 to 40 years with proper maintenance.

The Impact of History

Kays Curling has a rich heritage, with products that trace back to the 1924 Olympics. Their curling stones are not only used locally but are shipped worldwide to countries such as New Zealand, Australia, and China. The unique granite from Ailsa Craig ensures that competitors can’t replicate their product.

Ricky expresses pride in the significance of their work, particularly in relation to the Winter Olympics. The stones from Mauchline will feature prominently during the games, enhancing the global visibility of their craftsmanship.

Launch of Official Olympic Giftware

This year marks a milestone for Kays Curling, as they have launched officially licensed Olympic giftware available on their website. Ricky highlights the importance of being an official partner alongside major global brands.

The curling stones, representing the heart of Mauchline, will be showcased throughout the Olympic Games, with events continuing until February 22. The team’s commitment and craftsmanship not only support the sport but also connect a local factory to an international audience.
