Golden Knights Promote Kai Uchacz
The Golden Knights have made a significant roster move by recalling forward Kai Uchacz from the AHL Henderson. This marks Uchacz’s first NHL recall, and he may make his debut this week before the league’s freeze. In a corresponding move, center Tanner Laczynski and defenseman Dylan Coghlan have been sent back down to Henderson.
Kai Uchacz’s Background
Kai Uchacz, 22, was a free agent signing from the WHL team Red Deer in 2024. Over the last season and a half, he has progressed in Henderson, scoring 21 goals and compiling 50 points in 107 professional games. His rise to the NHL comes after overcoming challenges during his junior career.
Controversy and Growth
Uchacz faced scrutiny during the 2019-20 season when he was cut from the Seattle Thunderbirds. He was suspended for directing racist taunts towards teammate Mekai Sanders. After completing anti-racism training, Uchacz returned to the WHL for the 2021-22 season, ultimately serving as captain for the Red Deer Rebels in his final season, which ended in 2024.
Injury Impact and Team Strategy
The Golden Knights are currently dealing with injuries to key players. Brett Howden, Jonas Røndbjerg, Brandon Saad, and Colton Sissons are all on the injured list. As a result, Uchacz is expected to step into the lineup against the Vancouver Canucks.
- Kai Uchacz: Recalled from AHL Henderson.
- Tanner Laczynski: Sent back to Henderson.
- Dylan Coghlan: Returned to the minors for more playing time.
This recall leaves the Knights with 12 healthy forwards, including Uchacz. Standing at 6’2″ and weighing 209 pounds, Uchacz is a natural center, likely filling Laczynski’s role on the fourth line. Laczynski previously participated in nine games for Vegas this season, with two assists and an average ice time of 10:13, establishing a new career-high.
Future Outlook
With key forwards sidelined, Uchacz’s opportunity in the NHL comes at a critical time for the Golden Knights. His performance could be pivotal as the team navigates a challenging period.
