Get Your Refund After Monday’s GO Train Derailment: Here’s How

Following the recent GO train derailment on Monday, many commuters are eager to understand how to secure refunds for their disrupted travel. Metrolinx has announced it will honor its Service Guarantee Policy for affected trips, allowing passengers to reclaim some of their lost time and money.

Refund Eligibility for GO Train Passengers

Commuters who experienced delays due to the derailment can apply for refunds under specific criteria:

  • Purchased Tickets: Tickets must be bought within one hour of the scheduled departure time of the delayed train.
  • PRESTO Users: If you used a physical PRESTO card, or paid via PRESTO in a Mobile Wallet, you must have tapped on within 15 minutes prior to the train’s scheduled departure.

How to Apply for a Refund

To initiate your refund process, follow these steps:

  • Visit the “Check Trip” link on the Metrolinx website to verify if your trip qualifies.
  • It may take up to 72 hours for the eligibility status to be updated in the system.
  • Submit your claim online within 30 days of the delay.

For those using a day or group pass, contacting Metrolinx’s Contact Centre is necessary for assistance.

Compensation Process

If eligible, here’s how compensation will be processed:

  • Credit for PRESTO Users: Approved claims will result in an automatic credit back to your PRESTO card upon your next tap.
  • Contactless PRESTO Payments: Users paying with a credit card via contactless will see their refunds processed within 7 to 10 business days after approval.
  • Paper and E-Ticket Users: Credits will be issued to your PRESTO card or equivalent e-tickets after claim processing, typically within three business days.

Passengers who experienced delays are encouraged to follow these guidelines to ensure they receive their rightful refunds. This process aims to alleviate some of the frustration stemming from the derailment, allowing commuters to recover a portion of their travel expenses.
