Commanders Appoint Vikings’ Daronte Jones as Defensive Coordinator

The Washington Commanders have appointed Daronte Jones as their new defensive coordinator. Previously, he served as the defensive passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach for the Minnesota Vikings.

Daronte Jones’ Coaching Background

Jones joined the Vikings’ coaching staff in 2022. Initially, he was the defensive backs coach and took on the role of passing game coordinator in 2023. His coaching career includes positions under renowned coaches such as Vance Joseph, Mike Zimmer, and Brian Flores.

Previous Coaching Experience

  • Miami Dolphins (2016-2017): Assisted in defensive strategies.
  • Cincinnati Bengals (2018-2019): Further developed his defensive coaching skills.
  • LSU (2021): Served as the defensive coordinator, showcasing his ability to lead a defensive unit.

Jones is set to replace Joe Whitt, who was let go by the Commanders on January 6. Despite Whitt’s dismissal, head coach Dan Quinn had already taken over play-calling duties during the season, specifically after Week 10.

Defensive Struggles of the Commanders

The Commanders faced significant challenges on defense last season. They ranked last in the NFL for yards allowed and 27th in points allowed. This highlights the need for a strategic overhaul, which Jones is expected to address.

With Jones at the helm, the Commanders hope to see an improvement in their defensive performance next season. This appointment signals a commitment to strengthening their defensive strategies moving forward.
