‘Spaceballs 2: The New One’ Trailer Parodies ‘Star Wars’, ‘Avatar’, and Mergers

Mel Brooks sent a pre-recorded message to CinemaCon in Las Vegas. The 99-year-old comedy icon announced a much-awaited sequel title, ‘Spaceballs 2: The New One’.

Cast and crew

The follow-up reunites several original performers. Rick Moranis returns as Lord Dark Helmet. Daphne Zuniga comes back as Princess Vespa. George Wyner and Bill Pullman reprise Colonel Sandurz and Lone Starr. Brooks appears again as Yogurt.

New additions join the cast. Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman and Anthony Carrigan take on new roles. Their characters remain under wraps.

Trailer debut and parodies

Cast members brought the trailer to the CinemaCon stage. Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga, Josh Gad and both Pullmans presented the clip.

The trailer parodies ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Avatar’ with rapid-fire visual jokes. It also lampoons other blockbuster franchises, including a nod to Harry Potter. Audiences saw desert explorers, robot figures, and a frozen-in-carbonite gag.

One sight gag pictured Lord Dark Helmet at a urinal beside a Na’vi character from Avatar. The film’s humor mixes affectionate spoof with broad slapstick.

Production notes

Josh Greenbaum directs from a script by Josh Gad, Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. Greenbaum is known for Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar and Will & Harper.

Amazon MGM released promotional material but kept plot specifics sealed. The studio joked that story details are tightly guarded behind the Schwartz shield.

Release and legacy

The new picture is scheduled to open on April 23, 2027. The project promises to riff on Star Wars, Star Trek and Alien while remaining true to the original’s tone.

Brooks co-wrote and directed the 1987 original. He previously teased the sequel with a Star Wars-style opening crawl referencing the 38 years since the first film.
