April Offers Free Blood Pressure Checks Nationwide

Warrington Borough Council is running a series of free drop-in blood pressure checks across the borough this April. The programme aims to identify people with undiagnosed hypertension and reduce avoidable health risks.

The campaign is supported by the council. Councillor Maureen McLaughlin, cabinet member for health, wellbeing and social care, asked residents to make use of the sessions.

Why these checks matter

Local health officials estimate around one in three adults in Warrington may have undiagnosed high blood pressure. Untreated hypertension raises the risk of heart attack, stroke and kidney disease.

What happens at a session

Clinicians will measure blood pressure and record readings. They will offer advice on lifestyle changes and next steps, including medication when needed.

Home monitoring and costs

Councillor McLaughlin also encouraged home checks to track readings over time. Basic home blood pressure monitors start at about £20 in pharmacies and online.

Other testing options

Checks are also available at most pharmacies and at GP surgeries through the NHS Health Check for 40 to 74 year olds. The local effort complements broader initiatives such as April Offers Free Blood Pressure Checks Nationwide, which urges people across the country to get checked.
