Campbell Secures First Decade Win as Skip at Scotties in Saskatchewan

In a thrilling display of skill and determination, Jolene Campbell marked her return to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts by securing a decisive 8-5 victory over British Columbia’s Taylor Reese-Hansen. This win, which evens her team’s round-robin record to 1-1, is especially meaningful as Campbell competes as a skip for the first time in a decade, proudly wearing the colors of Saskatchewan.

Historic Win in Saskatchewan

At 44 years old, Campbell is leading a talented rink that includes long-time skip Robyn Silvernagle as vice, along with Rachel Big Eagle and Dayna Demmans at the front end. The competition took place at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre, where the team had previously faced an 11-3 defeat against Nova Scotia’s Taylour Stevens.

Team Performance and Strategy

In their latest match, Campbell showcased impressive precision, throwing at an 81% success rate. Silvernagle excelled as well, achieving an outstanding 89% rate among back-end players. “If we keep improving and reading the ice better, we can contend with anyone,” Silvernagle noted after the game.

  • Campbell was a fifth on Amber Holland’s championship team in 2011.
  • She previously skipped her team to a 6-5 record at the 2016 national playdowns.
  • In 2022, she participated as third on a wild-card entry skipped by Chelsea Carey.

Reflecting on her pride in representing Saskatchewan, Campbell stated, “Wearing the green jacket brings so much support and love from back home.” Silvernagle, participating in her fourth Scotties, expressed the advantages of their competitive partnership and the “sisterhood” they share.

Key Moments in the Game

In a critical play during the ninth end, Campbell executed a triple-takeout that limited the opposing team to a single point. With the hammer coming home, she sealed the victory with a successful hit. Silvernagle praised Campbell’s confidence as a skip: “She’s a clutch player who has a solid game plan.”

Throughout the tournament, notable performances included:

  • Kaitlyn Lawes (Manitoba) secured an 11-6 win over Hailey Armstrong (Ontario).
  • Kerri Einarson (Canada) defeated Taylour Stevens (Nova Scotia) 9-6.
  • Jolianne Fortin (Quebec) triumphed over Bayly Scoffin (Yukon) with a score of 10-5.

The competition is set to continue until February 1, and the winning team will earn the opportunity to represent Canada at the world women’s curling championship in March in Calgary.
