CBFC Alters Mardaani 3: ‘Bachhi’ to ‘Ladki’ and Adjusts Slap Scenes
Rani Mukerji returns as the determined inspector Shivani Shivaji Roy in “Mardaani 3,” the latest installment in the popular franchise. Following the success of its predecessors, “Mardaani” (2014) and “Mardaani 2” (2019), the film is set to hit theaters on January 30, after being rescheduled from its original date of February 27, 2024. Production is handled by Yash Raj Films (YRF), which completed the necessary censor process to prepare for the release.
CBFC Makes Significant Modifications to “Mardaani 3”
In its review, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) implemented several changes to the film, focusing on sensitive content. Notable modifications include:
- The word “bachhi” was changed to “ladki” to better align with the film’s themes of women’s empowerment.
- Drug disclaimers were added to ensure responsible messaging.
- Visuals depicting a girl being slapped were altered.
- Derogatory terms in English subtitles were amended, including substituting “whe” with “trader”.
- References to sexual organs were appropriately toned down.
- Negative expressions regarding the Government of India were replaced.
- Specific country names were removed from certain scenes.
- Clarification was required for a dialogue spoken by kidnappers.
- Information on child and woman trafficking was mandated to be included.
After these adjustments, “Mardaani 3” received a U/A 16+ rating on January 14, with a runtime of 137.07 minutes (2 hours, 17 minutes, and 7 seconds).
Voluntary Cuts Result in Shorter Runtime
Approximately ten days after the film secured its certification, YRF sought to make voluntary cuts to further trim the film. A total of 14 scenes were either shortened or deleted, resulting in a reduction of 6 minutes and 30 seconds from the original runtime. The new runtime is now 130.37 minutes (2 hours, 10 minutes, and 37 seconds). These voluntary modifications were approved by the CBFC on January 23.
“Mardaani 3” aims to engage viewers with its thrilling narrative while also addressing crucial social issues. As the release date approaches, anticipation builds for Muquerji’s portrayal of a fearless advocate for women’s rights and safety.
