Public Radio Acquires WEEI 103.7 RI Frequency for Content Overhaul
WEEI 103.7, the longstanding sports radio station in Rhode Island, has ceased operations following its acquisition by Ocean State Media. This local public radio entity, which manages the Public’s Radio in Rhode Island, reportedly purchased the station for $4.9 million.
Significance of the Acquisition
This transaction marks a significant shift in the Rhode Island broadcasting landscape. Ocean State Media, a not-for-profit organization with assets exceeding $115 million according to IRS filings, aims to streamline its operations. The acquisition will allow it to consolidate its existing network of five frequencies into a more coherent broadcast service.
The End of an Era for Sports Broadcasting
The closure of WEEI signifies the end of over 20 years of sports radio in the Providence area. Audacy, WEEI’s parent company, has faced ongoing financial difficulties, culminating in a bankruptcy filing in January 2024. The station had already closed its Rhode Island office in 2023, indicating an ongoing decline.
Future Prospects for Ocean State Media
Once the acquisition receives approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Ocean State Media will enhance its broadcasting capabilities. Pam Johnston, President and CEO of Ocean State Media, stated that the new arrangement will enable listeners to access “a single frequency for a clear, high-quality broadcast.” This change aims to improve the delivery of local news and information across Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts.
Challenges Ahead
Johnston’s leadership has been marked by significant staffing reductions due to financial constraints. Despite these challenges, the plan to integrate WEEI’s frequency into Ocean State Media’s operations reflects a commitment to fostering local content.
