Newsom Urges U.S. Allies: Resist Trump’s “T-Rex” Tactics

California Governor Gavin Newsom has urged U.S. allies to confront what he describes as “T-Rex” tactics employed by former President Donald Trump. His appeal is particularly relevant as European leaders navigate a diplomatic crisis concerning Trump’s push to acquire Greenland.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Newsom emphasized the consequences of European leaders’ previous soft responses to Trump’s aggressive maneuvers. He noted that they are now “paying the price” for not adopting a tougher stance when Trump returned to power a year ago.

Trump’s Greenland Acquisition and Tariff Threats

Trump has threatened to impose a 10% tariff on eight European nations that reject his proposal for the U.S. to take over the Danish territory of Greenland. In light of this, Newsom called on leaders to “get serious” and “stand united” against such aggressive trade tactics.

He articulated, “This is diplomacy with Donald Trump. He’s a T-Rex. You mate with him or he devours you.” Newsom cautioned that if European nations continue their current approach, they risk being “devoured” in the political landscape.

A Call for Strength and Unity

Newsom’s vocal opposition comes at a time when many leaders in Washington seem unwilling to challenge Trump directly. He has openly criticized Congress for their complacency, stating, “I can’t take this complicity. People rolling over.”

In addition to Newsom, former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen reinforced this message during the summit. He indicated that the future of NATO is at stake, advising leaders to demonstrate strength and unity in their response to Trump.

European Responses to Trump’s Aggression

  • EU leaders are considering enhancing Arctic security.
  • There are proposals for discussions on the sidelines of the Davos summit.
  • Talk of deploying a “trade bazooka” as a potential retaliation against U.S. tariffs.

French President Emmanuel Macron has added to the discussion, emphasizing the need for a unified approach. He indicated that the EU should not hesitate to employ its anti-coercion mechanism against the United States, labeling Trump’s actions as a form of “new colonialism.”

Macron, who recently underwent eye surgery, criticized the notion of allowing Trump to dictate terms over Greenland. “Can you imagine that?” he said, underscoring the absurdity of the situation while advocating for diplomatic focus on peace initiatives in Ukraine.

The urge from leaders like Newsom and Macron reflects increasing concerns about Trump’s unpredictability and the implications of his trade policies on international relations. As tensions escalate, it remains to be seen how European allies will navigate the precarious landscape shaped by U.S. leadership.
