RMT Strikes Against Imposed Tube Four-Day Compressed Workweek Plan

The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) has announced a series of strikes against London Underground’s new compressed workweek plan. The proposal aims to condense a typical working week into four days for tube drivers, a move that has faced significant opposition among Train Operators.

Concerns Over Compressed Workweek

The RMT highlights several key concerns regarding the compressed workweek, including:

  • Shift lengths leading to worker fatigue.
  • Unacceptable working time arrangements.
  • Issues surrounding transfer and allocation processes.
  • Safety implications arising from extended shifts.

Union representatives have sought to address these issues in negotiations for months. Unfortunately, London Underground has pressed on with its unpopular plan without reaching an agreement with RMT.

Strike Dates and Actions

The strikes will occur on the following dates:

  • March 24-25: 12:00 PM Tuesday to 11:59 AM Wednesday
  • March 26-27: 12:00 PM Thursday to 11:59 AM Friday
  • April 21-22: 12:00 PM Tuesday to 11:59 AM Wednesday
  • April 23-24: 12:00 PM Thursday to 11:59 AM Friday
  • May 19-20: 12:00 PM Tuesday to 11:59 AM Wednesday
  • May 21-22: 12:00 PM Thursday to 11:59 AM Friday

Additionally, from March 21, RMT members are instructed not to use company-issued electronic devices, including iPads, until further notice.

RMT’s Position

RMT General Secretary Eddie Dempsey expressed serious concerns regarding the proposed changes. He stated, “London Underground is trying to impose shifts that have been rejected by our members. These proposals pose risks to fatigue, safety, and work-life balance.”

Dempsey emphasized that despite ongoing negotiations, no satisfactory resolution has been reached. “We are prepared to take strike action unless a workable solution is presented by London Underground,” he added.
