Rockstar Unveils Official Marketplace for Game Mods
Rockstar Games has introduced a new official marketplace called Cfx Marketplace, designed for game modifications. This platform aims to provide every server and player the opportunity to buy and sell mods.
Acquisition of Cfx.re
In 2023, Rockstar acquired Cfx.re, the modding team behind popular multiplayer servers for Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. These servers, FiveM and RedM, focus on multiplayer role-playing experiences.
History of FiveM and RedM
FiveM was established in 2015 and RedM followed in 2019. Initially, in 2015, Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive criticized the FiveM server, branding it as an unauthorized service that facilitated piracy. This led to the banning of three main developers involved with FiveM.
Change in Policy
However, in November 2022, Rockstar revised its policy regarding roleplay servers. The new rules allowed the use of servers like FiveM and RedM, provided they were non-commercial, did not violate intellectual property rights, and did not interfere with official online services.
Features of the Cfx Marketplace
The launch of Cfx Marketplace is a major step forward for content creators. The platform aims to offer a “curated digital storefront” for users to share and monetize their creations.
- Participants can sell props, scripts, maps, and various other modifications.
- Some items will be available for free, while bundles may cost several hundred dollars.
- The rollout of the marketplace will occur in phases, ensuring optimal experiences for creators and server owners.
Rockstar has collaborated with a specially curated list of creators to build this marketplace, making sure that it meets the needs of the community effectively. The goal is to foster creativity while maintaining compliance with the company’s guidelines.
