Celtic Legend Explains Why Coaching Isn’t in His Future
The 39-year-old former goalkeeper retired from playing in 2024. Since then, he has focused on broadcast work as a pundit.
Broadcast career after retirement
He has appeared regularly on TNT Sports, the BBC and Match of the Day. Media work has become his primary post-playing role.
Short coaching spell at his hometown club
Earlier this season, he served as a goalkeeping coach for his hometown club for a single match. Gavin Cowan and Dave Edwards had arrived, and the club lacked a goalkeeper coach.
He said he offered help for one night only. He has confirmed that the brief stint will not be repeated.
Why full-time coaching was ruled out
He told Soccer AM’s Tubes on the Golf Life podcast he enjoyed goalkeeping. He did not enjoy the professional coaching environment.
He said a coaching role would demand a 24/7 commitment. That intensity, he added, would affect family life.
On whether coaching could happen later
Asked if he might coach in future, he stressed he understands what the job requires. He said he does not feel he has the temperament for a coaching career.
In short, he made clear that coaching isn’t in his future as a full-time pursuit. He prefers to remain focused on media work.
