Phillies Add Jhoan Duran to 15-Day Injured List
The Philadelphia Phillies made five roster moves on Monday. The most significant change involved a key reliever.
Injury update and roster change
Right-hander Jhoan Duran was placed on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to April 15. The team cited a left oblique strain.
Phillies Add Jhoan Duran to 15-Day Injured List was the headline focus of the transaction notice. Manager Rob Thomson is scheduled to speak with reporters later today.
Expected recovery timeline
Team officials noted Duran has not appeared since last Saturday. Initial absence seemed tied to game situations rather than injury.
Unless the strain proves very minor, Duran could miss roughly a month. More clarity should come after Thomson’s media availability.
Bullpen implications
Duran has been the Phillies’ closer this season. He owns a 1.35 ERA and a 33.3% strikeout rate over 6 2/3 innings.
He has issued zero walks and converted all five save chances. His loss leaves a void at the back end.
There is no obvious single replacement for ninth-inning duties. Philadelphia may use a committee approach.
Jose Alvarado has closing experience but carries a 10.50 ERA across six innings. That mark is inflated by a .450 BABIP.
Other candidates include Brad Keller, Orion Kerkering, and Tanner Banks. Save opportunities will depend on game context.
Call-ups and roster additions
The Phillies recalled right-hander Seth Johnson from Triple-A. They also selected the contract of utilityman Felix Reyes.
Reyes joins the 40-man roster for the first time. He will make his major league debut once he appears in a game.
About Felix Reyes
Reyes signed as an international free agent with Philadelphia in 2020. He is 25 years old and not ranked among the club’s top-30 prospects.
He did not reach Triple-A until a six-game stint in Lehigh Valley in 2025. This season he has slashed .333/.345/.654 with six homers in 84 plate appearances.
Reyes earned Eastern League MVP honors in 2025. At Double-A Reading, he hit .335/.365/.572 with 15 homers and 13 steals in 395 plate appearances.
He can play corner outfield and corner infield spots. The Phillies may try him at third base while Alec Bohm struggles offensively.
Other moves: Kemp optioned, Leon released
Utilityman Otto Kemp was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Kemp had 22 plate appearances this season.
He collected two hits and posted a .282 OPS. The club chose to replace him on the bench with Reyes.
Outfielder Pedro Leon was released and will test the open market. Philadelphia acquired him via waivers from Baltimore in November.
Leon hit .285/.358/.326 over 53 Triple-A plate appearances this year. He still had a minor league option left but did not earn a major league call.
The 27-year-old has seven big-league games and 21 plate appearances with the 2024 Astros on his resume.
Context for the season
The Phillies entered the day with an 8-11 record. The bullpen has been inconsistent overall.
Duran’s absence is a notable setback for a team seeking greater stability. Filmogaz.com will provide updates after Thomson’s comments and further medical details emerge.
