Salford Commuters Advised to Prepare for Year’s Busiest Day
Salford commuters advised to prepare as the tram network faces what Transport for Greater Manchester describes as the region’s busiest day. Sunday, 19 April will combine the Manchester Marathon with a high-profile Manchester City home match.
Why the network will be busier than usual
More than 40,000 runners are expected to take part in the marathon. Thousands more will line the route to cheer them on. A sell-out crowd is also expected at the Etihad Stadium for City’s Premier League clash with Arsenal.
Marathon route and timings
Runners will start from the Trafford Arch near Old Trafford at 8.55am. The 26.2-mile route passes Deansgate, Stretford, Sale, Chorlton and Altrincham.
The race finishes outside the University of Manchester on Oxford Road. The final wave begins at 11.30am and there is a six-hour cut-off after the last start.
Disruptions and local impacts
Several road closures are planned across Manchester and Trafford. Widespread bus diversions will affect journeys throughout the day.
Tram diversions and additional congestion are expected around Salford Quays and Ordsall. Organisers warn of knock-on delays on other routes.
Lines to watch
- Altrincham line: expected to be particularly busy.
- East Didsbury line: heavy passenger numbers likely.
- Eccles line: increased demand expected through Ladywell, Langworthy, Broadway, MediaCityUK, Harbour City and Salford Quays.
Advice from transport authorities
Transport for Greater Manchester has urged people to plan journeys in advance. Chief Network Officer Danny Vaughan urged commuters to allow extra time and be prepared for crowded trams.
Passengers are advised to use the Bee Network app and website for live travel information. Tap-and-go contactless payments are recommended as the quickest option.
Travel planners should allow at least 30 minutes of additional time for journeys on key tram lines. Tram boarding waits are likely, especially before and after the match.
