Airline Introduces Stacked Bunk Bed Pods Amid Backlash Over Costly Flights
Air New Zealand will offer passengers lie-flat sleeping pods on its longest routes. The carrier says the feature aims to improve comfort on ultra-long flights.
Skynest design and onboard amenities
The product, called Skynest, places six individual pods in a stacked, bunk configuration. Each pod provides a mattress, pillow and blanket.
Other comforts include a reading light, ventilation, a privacy curtain and device charging outlets. Passengers also receive a complimentary kit with an eye mask and earplugs.
Routes, sessions and pricing
The pods will debut on Auckland–New York services. That route can last up to 18 hours.
Travelers may book a single four-hour session per flight. Air New Zealand set base prices beginning at $495 per session.
Passenger reaction
Reaction has been mixed. Some travelers praised the opportunity to lie flat on a long-haul flight.
Others criticized the cost. Online discussion noted the effective hourly rate and questioned whether economy travelers would pay for the option.
Community feedback
Comments on social platforms ranged from cautious optimism to sharp complaints about value. Many users singled out price as the main concern.
Some observers suggested the pods could appeal as a middle-ground choice versus full upgrades to premium cabins.
How Skynest fits into wider airline trends
The Skynest builds on Air New Zealand’s earlier Skycouch product. Skycouch converts a row of seats into a flat surface for rest.
Across the industry, carriers are adding premium comfort options to boost revenue. United Airlines and others have expanded higher-end seating and upgraded cabin features.
