CBS Announces ‘NCIS: New York’ with LL Cool J and Scott Caan

CBS has approved a new NCIS spinoff set in New York City. The series will star LL Cool J and Scott Caan. It is scheduled to premiere this fall.

Cast and characters

LL Cool J returns to the franchise as Sam Hanna. He originated the role on NCIS: Los Angeles and starred for 14 seasons from 2009 to 2023.

He has also guest-starred on the flagship NCIS and on NCIS: Hawai’i. He is slated to appear in two NCIS episodes airing April 21 and April 28.

Scott Caan joins the new series in a fresh role. He previously played Danny “Danno” Williams on Hawaii Five-0 for ten seasons, from 2010 to 2020.

Caan has crossover experience with NCIS: Los Angeles. For this New York set spinoff, he will portray a new character.

Creative team

The pilot was written by Scott Gemmill. Gemmill worked on all 14 seasons of NCIS: Los Angeles and served as showrunner for seven seasons.

He now develops original work, including The Pitt on HBO Max. Byron Balasco will act as showrunner on NCIS: New York.

Balasco worked as a writer-producer on Without a Trace. He also created the Audience Network drama Kingdom.

Network context and schedule

The press event in Los Angeles also highlighted other CBS plans. The network renewed Beyond the Gates and Harlan Coben’s Final Twist.

CBS revealed development of Flint, a cop drama starring Matt LeBlanc. Company leaders described LL Cool J as part of the CBS family.

They said returning Sam Hanna to New York offered strong creative possibilities.

Franchise outlook

NCIS first premiered in 2003. The series will begin its 24th season this fall.

CBS’ fall 2026 lineup will include two other franchise spinoffs. NCIS: Origins returns for Season 3, and NCIS: Sydney returns for Season 4.
