Roblox Introduces Child Accounts Following Grooming Allegations
The popular online gaming platform Roblox is set to introduce new child-specific accounts, addressing growing concerns about online safety. This decision comes two months after the Australian government expressed concerns over grooming allegations and the exposure of minors to inappropriate content.
Introduction of Child Accounts
Roblox will launch two accounts aimed at enhancing safety for younger users in June. The accounts are:
- Roblox Kids: Targeted at children aged five to eight.
- Roblox Select: Designed for users aged nine to 15.
The platform’s age verification process, which includes facial recognition, will assign users to their respective accounts. This initiative aims to provide a safer gaming environment for children and teenagers.
Content Restrictions and Features
Users under the age of nine will have limited access to games. Roblox Kids will only allow games rated “minimal” or “mild,” with the chat function disabled by default. This account will feature a distinct electric blue background for easy identification.
In contrast, Roblox Select will provide access to games with a “moderate” maturity rating. Gradual introduction of chat room functions with added safeguards will enable users to communicate with family and friends, or others in their age group.
Roblox’s Commitment to Safety
Roblox’s Chief Safety Officer, Matt Kaufman, stated, “While no system is perfect, these accounts help reduce guesswork for parents by aligning user experiences with age.” A review process for all games will be implemented to ensure compliance with safety standards.
Parental Controls and Guidance
Enhancements to parental controls will allow parents to block specific games and manage chat functions until their child turns 16. This move aims to empower parents in safeguarding their children’s online interactions.
Roblox’s Growing Popularity
Roblox has experienced significant growth, boasting approximately 111 million daily users globally, with around 40% under the age of 13. Australia ranks as the second-largest market for the platform, following the United States.
Collaboration with Government Bodies
In February, Communications Minister Anika Wells met with Roblox representatives to address concerns surrounding the impact of the platform on children. In a letter prior to the meeting, she highlighted the alarming reports of children being targeted by online predators.
Following the introduction of these accounts, the Australian government plans to closely monitor the effectiveness of Roblox’s updated safety measures. “Kids should be able to play their favorite games without harmful exposure,” Wells stated, emphasizing the importance of these changes.
Future Developments
Starting in 2026, Roblox will transition to the Australian Classification Board to assign content ratings, aiding families in identifying appropriate content for children. This initiative is part of a broader commitment to ensuring safe gaming experiences for users of all ages.
Roblox aims to adapt to both user needs and regulatory expectations while addressing the serious issues of online safety and child protection in gaming environments.
