Coles Advances New Norfolk Supermarket Plan with ACCC Approval

Coles has made significant progress towards establishing a new supermarket in New Norfolk, receiving the green light from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). The approval comes for Coles’ acquisition of a leasehold interest at 120 Glebe Road, the location of the existing Phoenix Garden Centre.

Details of the ACCC Approval

The ACCC recently confirmed that the acquisition will not substantially lessen competition within the market. Their assessment highlighted the absence of Coles in the local area, as the nearest supermarket resides 18.5 kilometers away in Bridgewater.

The commission stated, “The acquisition would introduce a competing grocery retailer to the existing full-line Woolworths supermarket and the smaller IGA X-Press in New Norfolk.” The current site at Glebe Road is not utilized for grocery retail, thus providing a fresh market opportunity.

Background on the Site and Developer

  • Location: 120 Glebe Road, New Norfolk
  • Current Site: Phoenix Garden Centre

Population Growth in New Norfolk

New Norfolk has seen a rise in its population, increasing from 6,037 in the 2021 Census to an estimated 7,831 by late 2025. This 7.4% growth reflects a growing demand for retail services in the area, supporting the case for a new supermarket.

Future Prospects

With ACCC approval secured, Coles can move closer to establishing its supermarket in New Norfolk. While residents may need to wait a while longer to shop at the new location, this development adds to the competitive grocery environment in the region.
