Star Running Back Reunites with Hometown Vikings
The Minnesota Vikings are weighing a late addition to their running back room. Emmett Johnson, a Holy Angels product and Nebraska standout, is scheduled for a visit at the team facility this week.
Visit to TCO Performance Center
Darren “Doogie” Wolfson of KSTP reported the visit on Thursday. He said Johnson will be at the TCO Performance Center on Friday for meetings and workouts.
Wolfson noted Johnson’s local roots and Nebraska career. He added that Johnson was not heavily recruited by the Gophers under P.J. Fleck.
College production and playing profile
Johnson played four seasons at Nebraska and appeared in 41 games. He totaled 2,460 rushing yards on 458 carries, averaging 5.4 yards per carry.
He scored 15 rushing touchdowns and also contributed as a receiver. Johnson caught 85 passes across his final two seasons for 656 yards and five receiving scores.
His 2025 season led the Big Ten. He rushed for 1,451 yards on 251 carries, a 5.8-yard average, and added 12 rushing touchdowns.
Combine, draft range and scouting notes
At the 2026 NFL Combine, Johnson ran a 4.56 40-yard dash. That was the slowest time among the ten running backs tested.
Scouts project him as a Day Two selection. The Vikings hold two third-round picks, No. 82 and No. 97 overall, where he could be available.
Film evaluators graded him with strong effort and vision traits. One profile compared his playing style to Ray Rice and listed possible fits with the Cowboys and Seahawks.
Where he fits in Minnesota
The current Vikings backfield includes veteran Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason. Jones is expected to be on a more cost-conscious deal.
Minnesota is doing extensive homework at the position ahead of the draft in two weeks. Some reports suggested the team could target Notre Dame’s Jeremiyah Love via trade up, though that would conflict with a conservative draft approach.
Johnson’s motor and versatility could accelerate his climb on the depth chart. His skill set matches the type of player GM Rob Brzezinski and coach Kevin O’Connell have targeted.
A star running back from the area could reunite with his hometown Vikings if Minnesota signs him. Filmogaz.com will monitor the visit and provide updates leading into the draft.
