Amazon Luna Ceases Support for Third-Party Subscriptions and Game Purchases

Amazon has announced significant changes to its Luna cloud gaming service, ceasing support for third-party subscriptions and game purchases. This development will impact how users engage with the platform.

Immediate Changes to Subscriptions

Effective immediately, Luna users can no longer purchase Ubisoft+ and Jackbox Games subscriptions or standalone games through the service. Active subscriptions acquired via Luna will be automatically canceled at the end of the next billing cycle.

Access to Existing Subscriptions

Users with a Ubisoft+ subscription purchased directly from Ubisoft will retain access to that service on Luna until June 10. However, after June 3, the Bring Your Own Library feature will be eliminated, preventing access to games on platforms like EA, GOG, and Ubisoft through Luna.

Game Access and Refund Policy

Players who bought games outright on Luna will still be able to play them until June 10. Unlike Google’s approach with Google Stadia, Amazon will not issue refunds for any game purchases made on Luna. Users can continue to access purchased games through their respective platforms, such as the EA App, GOG Galaxy, or Ubisoft Connect.

Impact on Users

This shift raises concerns for users who lack powerful gaming systems and relied on Luna for access to demanding titles. Many may need to consider alternatives, such as GeForce Now, to play games they previously acquired through Luna, contingent on game compatibility.

Recent Updates and Future Direction

Amazon has been evolving Luna over recent months, launching a revamped version in October that emphasizes social gaming experiences, like GameNight, which allows mobile device interaction.

Subscription Options

For Prime subscribers, access to PC games and the ability to stream through the Luna Standard tier remains free of charge. The Luna Premium subscription continues to offer a wider variety of third-party games.

  • Effective June 3: Bring Your Own Library feature ends.
  • Effective June 10: Existing games played on Luna will remain accessible.

In a recent communication, Amazon indicated a commitment to providing diverse gaming experiences, emphasizing both third-party titles and unique offerings like GameNight. The company also mentioned plans to extend complimentary Luna Premium subscriptions to select users.
