British Gas Updates UK Bill Payers on Energy Crisis Impact

British Gas has published a customer update explaining how recent Middle East events may affect household energy costs. The company posted a video on YouTube in which its head of pricing, Simon, answered common questions. The update sought to inform British Gas customers and UK bill payers during worries about the wider energy crisis.

Short-term price outlook

Simon said current customer prices will not change before the end of June. He warned prices could alter from July 1 if global markets react to events in the Middle East. Wholesale costs account for roughly half of a typical energy bill, he added.

The firm explained that market spikes can feed through to household charges. Customers were reminded that fixed and tracker plans behave differently. Fixed tariffs lock a rate for a period, while trackers follow market moves.

Fixed versus tracker tariffs

Fixing a tariff can protect households if wholesale prices rise. Tracker tariffs may be cheaper if prices fall. The right choice depends on a household’s appetite for certainty.

Supply, storage and security

When asked about the risk of gas shortages, Simon said there is no immediate danger. The UK draws supply from North Sea production, renewable generation, and imported liquefied natural gas.

He noted long-term international supply agreements are in place. British Gas also referenced the Rough storage facility, which provides about 50% of the UK’s gas storage capacity.

Long-term energy mix and investment

Simon emphasised the roles of renewables and nuclear in stabilising costs. Both technologies reduce dependence on volatile global markets. British Gas said it supports existing nuclear plants and backs new projects such as Sizewell C.

Practical steps to cut bills

The update included immediate, low-cost actions to lower energy use. Suggestions included shorter appliance cycles and switching devices off at the mains.

  • Use shorter washing machine cycles.
  • Turn off unused devices at the mains.
  • Consider smart heating controls.
  • Upgrade to energy-efficient appliances.
  • Explore home solar options.

The company also highlighted a customer offer called PeakSave. It provides half-price electricity on Sundays for eligible British Gas accounts.

Where to find more information

British Gas encouraged customers to consult its online guidance for additional saving tips. The pricing head answered questions directly in the video titled about the Iran war and UK energy prices. The guidance aims to help UK bill payers manage any impact from current market changes.
