Bubba Watson Surprised by Unusual Scene at Augusta: ‘It Was Weird’
Two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson arrived at Augusta National this week and found the scene unexpectedly quiet. The 47-year-old said the calm left him puzzled ahead of the tournament.
Unusual scene on Monday
Watson described the empty practice areas and few other golfers. He said the sight felt out of place and called it “it was weird.”
He added that he briefly wondered whether he had shown up on the wrong day. The subdued atmosphere contrasted with his expectations.
Comments at the press conference
Speaking during a Monday presser, Watson said he expected more people on the grounds. He specifically noted the lack of fellow players during his arrival.
Watson said he did not know what was happening at first. He later moved on to other topics during the media session.
Masters return and exemptions
The 2026 Masters Tournament runs April 9–12 at Augusta National Golf Club. Watson returns as an exempt player after previous victories.
This will mark his 18th appearance by exemption. He won the green jacket in 2012 and 2014.
