Mexico’s Dominance Over U.S. in CONCACAF Champions Cup Explained

The CONCACAF Champions Cup resumes this week with the quarterfinal first legs. Four Liga MX clubs remain in the competition. The opening matches will draw attention across North America.

How Mexican clubs set the benchmark

Liga MX teams have been dominant in the tournament. Mexican sides have contested 60 finals in tournament history.

Club América and Cruz Azul are the most decorated clubs. Both clubs have won seven CONCACAF titles each. América has appeared in eight finals. Cruz Azul has reached nine.

Pachuca and Monterrey boast perfect records in finals. Pachuca finished 6-for-6 in championship matches. Monterrey is 5-for-5 in finals won.

Across the last two decades, Mexican teams lost only two finals. That record underscores Mexico’s continental strength.

Regional comparisons and notable non-Mexican clubs

Costa Rican clubs have reached 12 finals. MLS teams have made 11 finals, winning three and losing eight. All eight MLS defeats in finals came against Liga MX opponents.

Among non-Mexican clubs with multiple titles are Deportivo Saprissa, SV Transvaal, LD Alajuelense, and Defence Force FC. Those four sides account for nine combined championships.

Records and standout figures

Club América leads several historical categories. Las Águilas have played 87 matches. They have 50 wins and 176 goals scored.

América also holds the single-edition scoring mark. The club netted 35 goals in the 2014–15 tournament.

Honduran club Olimpia owns two different records. Olimpia has the most tournament appearances, with 38 editions. The club also conceded 27 goals in a single edition, a tournament record.

The all-time leading scorer in the competition is Javier “Chuletita” Orozco. He has 25 goals in CONCACAF play. Orozco scored 24 for Cruz Azul and one for Santos Laguna.

Cruz Azul enters this stage as the defending champion. They remain one of the competition’s joint-most decorated teams.
