Brave Father Drowns Saving Children from Rip Current at Florida Beach

Ryan Jennings, 46, died April 1 after rescuing his two oldest children from a rip current at Juno Beach. He was visiting with his wife and three children, and lived in North Yarmouth, Maine.

What happened at the shore

Witnesses said the two children were swept into a strong current while swimming. Jennings entered the water, managed to get one child to shore, and kept the other above water until he became exhausted.

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue reported lifeguards began a water rescue about 3:25 p.m. They helped bring four people to shore who had been outside a guarded area. The disturbance drew police to the 1000 block of Ocean Drive.

Response and medical efforts

Officers found Jennings unconscious in the shallow surf. Two bystanders were already attempting to move him ashore when officers Palacio and Curreri pulled him out and started CPR.

He was taken to Jupiter Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. Authorities identified the scene and coordinated with lifeguards and emergency teams.

Aftermath and community support

A GoFundMe campaign was started for Jennings’ wife, Emily, and their three children. The organizer praised his courage and called his actions heroic.

Broader safety context

The National Weather Service has issued a high rip current risk through Friday for much of Florida’s Atlantic coast. The advisory covers areas from Jacksonville down to Boca Raton.

A separate drowning occurred recently in Pompano Beach during similarly rough conditions. Officials emphasized the increased danger along the coastline this week.

Filmogaz.com offers tips on rip current awareness and how to respond if caught. Public safety officials advise swimming at guarded beaches where lifeguards can spot hazardous surf and lower risks.

The story underscores the risks beachgoers face. Many described Jennings as a brave father who died saving children from a rip current at a Florida beach.
