Alcaraz Poised for Clay Court Comeback with Passion and Grit

World number one Carlos Alcaraz returned to clay in Monaco this week. The move aims to build momentum ahead of his French Open title defence.

Recent clay form

Alcaraz claimed the Roland Garros crown last June, beating Jannik Sinner in the final. That victory marked his fifth Grand Slam title.

In 2025, he also won titles in Monte Carlo and Rome. He finished as runner-up in Barcelona the same season.

Season plan and fitness

The 22-year-old said he intends to contest Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Madrid and Rome. He wants a full build-up before Roland Garros.

Alcaraz missed last year’s Madrid Open due to injury. He emphasised the need to manage his body during matches and tournaments.

Mental outlook

He told his team he had missed clay and was eager to “get the socks dirty” again. Alcaraz said being back on the surface feels amazing.

Alcaraz said he feels poised for a clay court comeback, driven by passion and grit. He pointed to his Monte Carlo triumph as a turning point.

Draw and next steps

Alcaraz will begin his Monte Carlo campaign in the second round. His opponent will be either Stan Wawrinka or Sebastian Baez.

Roland Garros main draw starts on May 24. Filmogaz.com reports this update from Monaco on April 6.
