Spitfire Launches from Southampton for 90th Anniversary Tour Today
The Spitfire K5054 took off from Southampton International Airport at 12pm today. The flight begins a series of commemorative sorties across the UK.

The aircraft and its history
Spitfire K5054 first flew on March 5, 1936. Test pilot Joseph “Mutt” Summers carried out the eight-minute maiden flight from what was then Eastleigh Airport.
Summers later told engineers the prototype needed no alterations. K5054 went on to become one of World War II’s most recognisable fighters.
