Taiwan Opposition Leader Embarks on China Peace Mission; Minister Reveals Warship Plans

The Kuomintang (KMT) Chairperson Cheng Li-wun has embarked on a significant peace mission to China from April 7 to April 12, 2026. This visit marks the first trip by a KMT leader to China in a decade. Cheng’s journey is set against a backdrop of heightened military pressure from China towards Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its territory.

Cheng’s Objectives and Statements

Prior to her departure, Cheng stated her intentions to engage in a “historic journey for peace.” She acknowledged that some citizens might be apprehensive about her trip but emphasized the necessity of seizing opportunities to prevent conflict. “If you truly love Taiwan, you will seize every possible opportunity to keep Taiwan from being ravaged by war,” she stated. Cheng aims to foster dialogue and potentially meet with China’s President Xi Jinping.

Current Military Tensions

Accompanying Cheng’s peace efforts are concerns expressed by Taiwanese officials regarding China’s military maneuvers near the island. Kuan Bi-ling, head of Taiwan’s Ocean Affairs Council, revealed images of several Chinese warships stationed around Taiwan: two off the eastern coast and one in each the north, northwest, and southwest regions.

Calls for Dialogue

Chiu Chui-cheng, Taiwan’s minister for Mainland Affairs, urged Cheng to insist that Beijing cease its military pressure on Taiwan. He highlighted the importance of engaging with Taiwan’s democratically elected government, rather than the opposition party alone. This call for dialogue reflects ongoing tensions regarding Taiwan’s international status and security.

Upcoming Diplomatic Engagements

Cheng’s visit happens just a month prior to a scheduled summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and President Xi in Beijing. During a recent phone call, Xi expressed concerns regarding U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, indicating the sensitive nature of this geopolitical issue.

The KMT, having led the Republic of China, retreated to Taiwan in 1949 following a civil war against Mao Zedong’s forces. The upcoming trip will include a stop in Nanjing, the location of Sun Yat-sen’s mausoleum, the founding father of modern China.
